Half of Yemenis Have Solar Panels

Fifty-one percent of Yemenis access electricity either fully or mostly using solar panels, according to the findings of a study conducted by PERCENT in January 2017 on a national sample of 1,000 respondents in all Yemeni governorates. The reliance on solar panels as a source of energy has significantly increased since 2014, as the war exacerbated fuel and electricity shortages. 21% said they rely on traditional sources, including public electricity and generators. While 28% do not have any source of electricity to power light or operate household appliances. Nearly a quarter of those who said they have no source of electricity live in urban areas .

However, the use of solar panels as a source of electricity remains limited to the powering of light and the operation of television sometimes, due to the deterioration of the economic situation of the population and the high cost of this technology. One-third of solar panels users said they barely use them to power their lamps, and the rest cited powering both television and lamps. Additionally, very few use it to operate other electrical appliances.

The survey did not cover much the size of using solar energy in generating electricity, but it can be noted that a number of economic lamps flooded the Yemeni market during this period, especially in the areas of solar energy use. 12-Volts lamps and electrical appliances spread over instead of 220 volts .

Trying this source of electricity practically, in addition to the high rise in fuel prices pushed some to use it in the agricultural sector to operate water pumps, but it is still limited and very expensive for the majority of farmers.

The cost of the solar energy system to operate a pump by farmers ranges from $ 12,000 to $ 27,000.
